Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for a shipping container?

In the UK, shipping containers are generally classed as “temporary structures” and often do not require planning permission. However, this depends on your local council, the duration of stay, and the site location (e.g., AONB or conservation areas). We always recommend checking with your local planning office before placing a permanent unit.

What is the difference between ‘New’ and ‘Used’ containers?

‘New’ containers (also known as One-Way) have made a single journey from the factory in China and are in pristine condition. ‘Used’ containers are typically 10–15 years old, retired from shipping lines, and will show signs of wear such as dents or surface rust. However, we guarantee all used units are 100% wind and watertight.

What kind of base or foundation do I need?

Containers must be placed on level, hard-standing ground to ensure the doors operate correctly. Ideally, this should be concrete, tarmac, or a dedicated paving slab “foot” under each corner. Placing a container on soft grass or mud can lead to sinking and structural misalignment over time.

How much does delivery cost and where do you deliver?

We offer nationwide delivery across the UK mainland. Delivery costs are calculated based on your distance from our nearest hub and the type of vehicle required. Because containers are delivered via heavy HIAB (crane) trucks, prices vary. Please provide your postcode in the contact form for an accurate transport quote.

Can you place the container over a fence or wall?

Yes, our specialized HIAB crane trucks can “reach” and lift containers over low walls, fences, or obstacles. However, the distance is limited by the weight of the container and the size of the crane. If you have a difficult access point, please send us site photos so our logistics team can assess the feasibility.

Are the containers secure against theft?

Absolutely. All our containers are made of high-grade Cor-Ten steel. For added security, we recommend fitting a Lock Box (a steel shroud that protects the padlock from bolt cutters). We can weld these onto your unit prior to delivery for maximum peace of mind.
